April 29

Today was a good days work. Mowed greens first thing in the morning then changed the pins. It warmed up nice in the afternoon to about 80 degrees. Sprayed another full tank in the sprayer for weeds today. Targeting some areas that we got clover and dandelions pretty bad. Many are off the actual course but we still don't want them. Tomorrow spraying fungicides on the greens for the first time of the year.

Weekend April 28 and 29

Saturday was a wash out work for about 4 hours doing little thing like picking balls on the range and cleaning some stuff up.  Sunday was a long day. The power was out for 2 hours in the morning and since the battery was dead on the sand pro we couldnt get it started without the power.  So after the power came on we rake the bunker that werent full of water.  We had a tournament go off at 2 and worked all through that, then cleaned up afterward.  It turned out to be a 13 hour day and I am pooped. now off to bed

april 25

Spent the morning fixing cart paths.  We had frost on the course this morning, but then by noon it was 65 degrees.  After cart paths were finished I spent the rest of the day on the sprayer spraying for weeds. Also had a run in with 2 coyotes today and I almost smashed them with the bucket of the tractor.

april 23

More rain today.  Got to work at 7 and it started raining at 730 and hasn't stopped since.  I hope we can get this much rain in the middle of summer.  Plans for tomorrow are to fix some cart paths, finish mowing the rough if it isn't to wet, and do some more weedeating.

April 22

Just another normal day at the course. Trying to get caught up with mowing since we weren't able to mow all last week. Got the greens collars and approaches mowed today and the front nine of the rough. Got the pins changed and did a little weed eating. Put out brand new tee markers on the course. The weather men are calling for more rain tomorrow. I'm tired of the rain. Also got all of the post emergent herbicide ordered today along with some greens grade fertilizer. We will see what tomorrow brings.

April 19

Well today was a short day at work. Didn't do a whole lot. Went and checked out all of the damages from the rain. The lakes on the front nine were all out of their banks. The bunker that we are rebuilding this year was completely full of water(see picture). We had right at 4 inches of rain yesterday. There was water in places I have never seen before. Plan for tomorrow is fix some of the cart paths that washed away. Get greens mowed and pins changed. Oh ya and the weather went from 85 degrees Wednesday to snow flurries today. Got to love St.Louis weather.

Week 3

Week 3 is this week.  So far this week it has rained every day.  Monday I waited out the rain and got the greens mowed and pins changed.  Tuesday consisted of more rain so we did a little cleaning around the shop.  Wednesday it rained all morning again.  We picked up trash on the course after the rain, changed the tee markers, and did some more cleaning around the shop.  Today it has rained since 6 this morning.  The golf course is flooded and water standing everywhere.  I am estimating that we have about 4 inches of rain but will look when I get to work in the morning.  Our lakes on the front are overflowing, and I think this is more rain than we had all of last summer.  We got no rough mowed this week so next week the grass will be plenty high.  Tomorrow we are hoping to get the pins changed and greens mowed. Well week 3 was basically a wash out.

Week 2

Week 2 was a pretty normal week at work.  On Monday we put down fertilizer and pre-emergent in all of our rough.  This day kicked me in the butt lifting 50 pounds bags into the spreader all day long.  Tuesday and Wednesday consisted of having Ron, our rough mower, mow all of the rough for the first time.  These two day I mowed all the greens and collars.  Also changed pins on Tuesday.  Also had to do a little more spraying with the pre-emergent in our pastures and sod farm.  Thursday and Friday were cold and were spent in the shop.  We ground all of the fairway reels and put them back together and ground some of the tee and greens reels.  Well that basically sums up Week 2.

Week 1

In my first week back to work I sprayed all the tees and fairways with a generic brand of Round Up.  I also sprayed all the tees, fairways and green surounds with a pre-emergent herbicide called Resolute.  I sprayed at a rate of 40 GPA.  I also did some spot spraying with the round up on places I could not get with the boom sprayer.  Most of you might be thinking that round up would kill all of our turf.  The answer is that it kills all of the turf and weeds in the fairways and tees except for the zoysia.  It doesn't kill the zoysia because it is dormant from all of the cold weather. Well that sums up my first week.

Internship

My name is Casey Jahr and I am currently the assistant at Fairfield Golf Club in Columbia, Illinois.  I started this blog to keep track of everything I do in my internship this summer.  I am currently doing my internship in between my 2 sessions at The Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management Program.  I will keep track of what I do on a daily basis at work. Hope everyone enjoys.
